I can verify part of the book
Written in 1933, ---- I lived in China nearly half a century later. And I witnessed or experienced something described in this book. I don't know if the entire book is accurate BECAUSE the author had travelled to many places I have never been to.
a harsh critique of Chinese society and culture, ---- If you don't think something is wrong, why do you need to correct or improve? The Chinese are proud of their culture, tradition, and think they are superior to the rest of the world. (Why? Nobody wants to explain?)
Ways That Are Dark was written at a time when China was in the grip of considerable civil strife. Townsend claimed that the source of China's problems lay in fundamental defects in the ethnic characteristics of the Chinese people. ---- I can't agree more.
Although the book was a bestseller in the United States, it met with highly polarized reactions. ---- I anticipate the same thing when people come to write reviews because truth seekers want truth and liars want lies. How can the two groups of people not be polarized?
By the way, I'm Chinese and I don't believe in cultural relativism which was invented and promoted by liars for some purpose that they can't tell. Ways That Are Dark because they are dark not because of bias or racism or (you can fill dirty names in here) that some (lying) people may claim.
